Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
