A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
